Red Flag #1: The “Too Good to Be True” Price
The Trap: You send out inquiries to five suppliers. Four of them quote you around $5.00 per unit. The fifth one quotes $2.50. It’s tempting to jump on the lowest price, but in Chinese manufacturing, margins are razor-thin. If a price is significantly lower than the market average, something is wrong. They are either planning to use inferior materials, or they are a “bait-and-switch” scammer who will raise the price after you pay the deposit.

The Trap: You ask, “Are you the manufacturer?” They say, “Yes, of course!” They send you photos of a huge factory with their logo photoshopped onto the building. In reality, they are a small trading company working out of an apartment. They have no control over production, quality, or timelines. If the real factory delays your order, this middleman will lie to you to cover it up.

The Trap: The supplier sends you a sample. It is flawless. High quality, perfect packaging, exactly what you wanted. You feel confident and place a bulk order for 5,000 units. When the container arrives at your warehouse three months later, the products are completely different. Cheap plastic, poor stitching, and defects everywhere. The supplier sent you a high-quality sample (often bought from another factory) just to get your money.

The Trap: Everything seems fine, but when it’s time to pay, the supplier says: “Our corporate bank account is under audit. Please send the money to this personal account/Western Union.” Stop. Legitimate Chinese businesses must have a corporate bank account to export goods. Asking for payment to a personal account is the #1 sign of a hit-and-run scam. Once that money is sent, it is untraceable and unrecoverable.
